The doctor’s office can be a scary place for people. For some, they have anxiety every time they step into a medical facility that they’ll be receiving some bad news about their health. Or perhaps they feel extremely undereducated about their own health. Others might be embarrassed about their eating or exercise habits that have led to health problems. Whatever the case, many of us would rather see a doctor in veterinary scrubs than a doctor that is going to poke and prod us. Thankfully, there is something a doctor can do to set these types of people at ease and make an annual check-up or consultation for some health issue a much less painful process.
That something is a good bedside manner, which is essentially how a doctor communicates with a patient. Some doctors are very cold and impersonal, will only tell their patients what they think they need to know, and don’t encourage questions. Other doctors are warm and friendly, explain their reasoning, and give patients choices as to what they’d like to do regarding their care. A doctor with a good bedside manner often will make their patients feel at ease, as if they were talking to an old friend. The patient might feel like they can talk to their doctor about anything, from proper diet to where to buy scrubs, to problems they’re having at home. Good doctors simply make people feel comfortable. The important thing is finding a doctor with a style that works for you, since not everyone likes the same personality and communication style in their doctor.
If you haven’t thought about this aspect of your doctor, you might want to pay attention to it the next time you see him or her. See how your doctor communicates with you, and decide if you like or dislike their bedside manner. Many people simply don’t want to switch doctors once they’ve found one they can tolerate, but that’s not a great reason to stay with a doctor! Whether your doctor wears men’s or womens scrubs, you’ve got to find the right one for you. And while you want to make sure your doctor is competent and hard-working, there’s no reason you can’t find one that also makes you feel relaxed when you step in their office. After all, if you dread going to the doctor, you probably won’t go very often. And that might be the worst thing possible for your health!
