You have, no doubt, heard “go wash your face!” at least once a day for most of your life. If you are anything like the rest of us, washing your face is not the most enjoyable activity and making time to do it every day feels like a hassle. Taking the time to wash your face before going to bed is a chore–even if the memories of fighting acne all through puberty are still fresh. The problem is that, in order to keep your pores free of dirt, bacteria and other debris, you need to wash your face regularly. Do you really want to be a grown person sporting a face full of acne? Read on to learn a few tricks to help you keep your face clean and keep the acne away!
Be gentle when you wash your face! Don’t scrub! Scrubbing your face too hard can cause damage and make it more susceptible to breakouts. The skin on your face is incredibly sensitive and easily injured so scrubbing is far more harmful than helpful. Giving yourself scrubbing scars can be very embarrassing! Good face washing means finding the balance between firmness and being gentle. Don’t stress out, this is something everyone can learn! A bright red face is not the goal! A flushed face is okay as long as it is not bright red. Glowing is good but looking like a traffic light is bad.
Keep your hands off your face. The majority of the population doesn’t realize just how much time they spend touching their faces every day. Letting your face rest in your hands is just one way to clog your pores. Think about this. If you touch something and then touch your face, in essence, you are touching your face with that something. Your hands always have a thin layer of oil on them and when you rest your face in your hands, you are transferring that oil into your pores. This is one of the best ways for flu germs to travel–a sick person uses an object and then puts it down, leaving some germs behind so that when you then use the same object the germs are transferred to your hands and then later to your face when you touch your face with your hands! This is just one reason why touching your face with your hands is a bad idea.
Washing your hands often during the day is a good idea if you are not able to stop yourself from touching your face. Washing your hands often can help combat acne.
Do not, under any circumstances, pick at pimples or zits when they occur! Acne should not ever be subject to picking or squeezing. You never want to mess with your acne. It is all right to wash your face and treat your breakout with some acne fighting cleanser but never ever pop or pick at your zits. When left to heal naturally some breakouts might stick around for a day or two. Which of the following options do you like better? A pimple on your face for a couple of days or a pimple scar for the rest of your life?
