House Solar Panels – What You Need to Know Before You Mount Electric Solar Panels to Your Roof

House solar panels can be a very practical way to harness the energy of the sun and turn it into usable electricity for your house. Some people are concerned that mounting the panels to their roof can cause damage but the good news is that if the panels are mounted properly, there will be absolutely no damage at all. That said, most house rooftops are an excellent spot to mount electric solar panels.

The first thing to consider is which way your roof slopes. Naturally, you want to mount the panels in a spot that gets the most sunlight during the sunniest periods of the day. Tall trees, buildings and other obstructions will reduce the amount of sunlight collected and therefore reduce the amount of electrical energy produced.

Most house solar panels are very lightweight so mounting them to your roof will not cause a heavy load on the roof trusses. Trusses actually spread the weight of your roof out to the house walls which makes a roof mount ideal. One thing to consider is if you live in a part of the world that gets snow. If this is the case, you will want to mount your electric solar panels on a frame to allow airspace underneath them. This will prevent snow from building up alongside the panel which would eventually thaw and could damage your shingles. The frame will allow the snow to just melt away and run off.

As with any building project, you should check with your local government officials in regard to the legalities of installing home solar panels, but there should be no problem so long as everything is to code and doesn’t obstruct your neighbor’s views or yards.

The next consideration is the alignment of the solar panels. Ideally, you’ll want to set the panels up facing south to get maximum exposure to the sun and the highest possible performance and collection of energy. House solar panels are not as complicated as some would like to have you believe. The average homeowner could have a set installed and collecting solar energy in one weekend.
