How to Keep Fit With Salsa

Would you like to lose weight and keep fit and have fun doing it? The good news is that you do not have to be chained to a treadmill in order to get in shape, there are other options that are much more fun and effective at the same time. You can keep fit with salsa dancing and have a great time doing it.

There are a couple of options that are open to you when you decide that you would like to learn this style of Latin dancing. You can choose to sign up for a partner class and either take your partner with you or rope a friend into doing it with you. You can also dance with the other people that are at the class too and this can be a great way to meet new people and expand your social circle too.

Another option is that there are non partner classes that you can take, which is sometimes referred to as line salsa. Or, if you are a little shy dancing in front of others or you want to be free to exercise whenever it suits you and not be tied down to a scheduled class, then you can get a DVD to do at home.

Salsa is a fast paced Latin rhythm and the songs that you will be moving and wiggling to are fun and infectious. When you dance, you will be sweating in no time and moving all areas of your body, which results in an effective calorie burning workout.

Salsa movements place a heavy emphasis on moving the hips. The movements are largely controlled through tension in the abdominal area. What this means in a workout sense is that you will be working the stomach, hip and butt muscles – a lot. You will find that by doing this style of dancing you will be toning your muscles all over the body, but particularly in these areas and whittling down your waist.

In fact, dancing in general and salsa in particular offer a much wider ranging workout than a trip to the gym can. It uses your muscles in different way to running on treadmills and lifting weights does. You will develop muscle that is lean and toned. The muscle fibers that are developed will be flexible and there is much less chance of injury.

Dancing is great exercise for people of any gender and all ages. Not only that, but dance also provides a work out for your brain. Due to the patterns that are used in salsa dancing, it works your brain without you even realizing it and develops new neural pathways. That means that it can make you more mentally agile and ward off mental deterioration such as Alzheimer’s disease.

If you are looking for an alternative to the gym, then you should look into how you can keep fit with salsa dancing. Not only will you get fit and develop toned and flexible muscle, but you will also have a lot of fun doing it and meet new people.
