Chickens have impaired vision during nighttime, they don’t see very well and because of this they are more open to attack from predators. Foxes, dogs, rats, and other dangerous animals lurk in the darkness waiting for a chance to pounce on the unsuspecting fowls. Due to this, it is very imperative for chicken farmers to ensure their flock’s safety and here are some hints on how to make your chicken coop safer especially at night.
To keep them from predators, provide roosting bars for your chickens. They should be higher up from the ground and at least 25mm wide. Make them in the same size to prevent the chickens from competing against each other for the higher bar. This will allow the birds to perch on top of the bar when they are ready to sleep. Predators will find it hard to get to them because of the height and the bar’s structure.
These roosting bars should be made as smooth as possible and to let the chickens grip on it well, it must not be round. If you cannot provide them with roosting bars, you can let them perch on trees but this is very dangerous because predators can get to them easily this way.
There should be trays under the roosting bars to collect the chickens’ droppings in the morning. Chickens get rid of poop at night so to lessen the mess; there must be something to catch it. This makes cleaning of the coop easy and convenient for you.
After the chickens have had their last meal for the day, they retire and don’t get up until morning when they expect to be fed. You can then lock the coop to keep the chickens inside and predators outside. Unlock the coop in the morning so that the chickens can get out in the morning. A strong and sturdy coop can keep predators at bay.
You should also keep the coop from becoming drafty and moist. Opening up some windows would allow air to enter for ventilation but when it becomes colder, the chickens must be protected from the chilly wind or they get sick.
At daytime, chickens can see the surroundings well and when they have had a good sleep, they are happy and productive.
