Carports and garages are normally confused with each other a lot of times. A carport is a temporary shelter for vehicles, especially cars and finds their place in front of the house. This is more of a temporary structure and can be collapsible as well. These can be shifted as and when required to different locations. A garage is also a shelter for vehicles, but is more elaborate and is a permanent structure. This cannot be broken down as and when required and forms an integral part of the house.
Converting a carport into a garage is not an easy task. Most states have their own rules and regulations as far as placing carports are concerned. While some states are liberal; and allow you to place these in front of the house, on the walkways; some other states are quite strict and do not allow you to keep shifting these as per your requirement. While converting a carport into a garage, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind. Take a look at the present location of the carport and determine if that would actually meet your requirement, space-wise. Then you need to decide as to what kind of garage you are looking to build. If the carport is enclosed, it makes the conversion job easier, as you need to enclose and build walls only on the sides which are open.
Estimating the cost of your project is not that difficult. First you need to make a list of all the materials that you would require and then compare prices of these in different shops. Some items that you shall require are plywood for inside of walls, studs and hangers for the walls, garage door with opener and track, as well as some insulation for the roof. Labor is another important factor of expense that you need to take care. Plan the project and determine the exact labor requirements, so that it does not overshoot your budget. Garage doors come as ready made structures, as there are many garage door companies, who shall supply and install the door, with tracks and all related infrastructure, for a price. Take competitive quotes from at least three companies and compare prices. Go for the company which is a good mix of quality work as well as reasonable price.
There are contractors who shall be ready to take care of this job as a turnkey project and the price should come anywhere in between $ 3000 to $ 8000, depending on the state. As your basic structure is ready, it is time to add a few features that you feel are necessary to ensure smooth functioning of the garage. Cabinets to store lube oils and car components, cleaning material racks, plug points at different locations can help you use the garage in a smooth way.
