Once you know that, you can identify which target market can most benefit from what you have to offer. You also want to make sure that your target market is one that you are passionate about helping, that has a burning need for your solution, and is willing to pay for what you offer.
The next step is to research and evaluate your niche. You want to look at criteria like the size of the niche, the competition, and the accessibility. That last one is really important – you want to make sure you can easily access the niche through clearly defined communication channels. In other words, you have to know where your target market hangs out online (and offline).
Keyword research is also important in helping you assess your niche. It lets you get inside the mind of your target market to understand what they are searching for online. It also helps you evaluate how competitive your niche is.
But keywords are not the main factor you should use to choose a niche. Let me clarify that. If you’re an affiliate marketer selling a specific product, then keywords are likely at the heart of your niche. But if you’re a solo professional marketing yourself online, then you know it’s not about selling a product. It’s all about selling yourself.
And there are lots of ways to drive traffic beyond SEO. That’s especially true if you understand your target market. Make sure you participate in discussion groups and forums aimed at your niche. Follow the blogs of leaders in your niche. Join Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media sites where your target market hangs out. For each of these, participate fully by adding value and sharing information.
When you have a clear niche meaning and a good understanding of your target market, you can create a targeted internet marketing strategy that works.
