Niche meaning is not what you might think it is. Its not all about keywords. Rather finding your niche is all about you. Its an important point to understand, because how you define a niche is going to play a big role in how you market yourself online.
Let’s start with a simple niche definition. A niche combines two elements – your WHO and your WHAT. Your WHO is your target market and your WHAT is the solution you provide.
As you know, people are going online to look for solutions. They may want help reaching a goal or overcoming a specific challenge.
And as a solo professional, your need to identify what solution you provide, and who is your ideal target market. That is your niche meaning, and its what you need to strategically promote.
So how do you go about finding your niche? It starts with YOU. You need to tap into your passions, purpose, interests, experiences, skills, and expertise. That is at the heart of your solution. Once you know that, you can identify which target market can most benefit from what you have to offer. You also want to make sure that your target market is one that you are passionate about helping, that has a burning need for your solution, and is willing to pay for what you offer.
The next step is to research and evaluate your niche. You want to look at criteria like the size of the niche, the competition, and the accessibility. That last one is really important – you want to make sure you can easily access the niche through clearly defined communication channels. In other words, you have to know where your target market hangs out online (and offline).
Keyword research is also important in helping you assess your niche. It lets you get inside the mind of your target market to understand what they are searching for online. It also helps you evaluate how competitive your niche is.
But keywords are not the main factor you should use to choose a niche. Let me clarify that. If you’re an affiliate marketer selling a specific product, then keywords are likely at the heart of your niche. But if you’re a solo professional marketing yourself online, then you know it’s not about selling a product. It’s all about selling yourself.
And there are lots of ways to drive traffic beyond SEO. That’s especially true if you understand your target market. Make sure you participate in discussion groups and forums aimed at your niche. Follow the blogs of leaders in your niche. Join Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media sites where your target market hangs out. For each of these, participate fully by adding value and sharing information.

Inspired by the great R&B/Jazz/Pop artists of the 70s like EWF, Tower of Power, Chicago, David Sanborn, and others, Brian Culbertson started composing original music for his 7th grade piano recital and hasnt stopped having self-produced 16 solo albums, most of which have topped the Billboard Contemporary Jazz charts.Having worked and performed with countless industry all-stars like Michael McDonald, Chris Botti, Ledisi, Barry Manilow, Herb Alpert, Natalie Cole, Chuck Brown, and Bootsy Collins just to name a few, Brian has received numerous awards including being nominated for a 2012 NAACP Image Award and a 2012 Soul Train Award. Also in 2012, he founded the Napa Valley Jazz Getaway now in its 5th year.Brian is always striving to push the boundaries of the jazz scene, which is evident by his forthcoming album, Funk! due out this September. This new set is a throwback to the stanky P-Funk records from back in the day combining infectious bass lines, greasy horn licks, sing-a-long hooks and of course, landing hard on the One. This record is also a follow-up to his widely successful Bringing Back The Funk album from 2008, which was co-produced by the late Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire.Regardless of his success, fans can be rest assured that with the 16 albums and counting, Brian Culbertson always brings his very best and brings the very best out of others in all his broad-ranging musical endeavors.
