Politics, Celebrities and the Media!

Celebrities and politics. Politics and celebrities the concept goes hand in hand. In this day and age celebrities make politics and politics make celebrities. Society is dominated with celebrity as part of everyday culture. TV shows, the internet, magazines newspapers and now news reports dedicate significant portions of their broadcast to celebrities and their politics of the day. More and more we are seeing obscure ways for celebrities to grab the attention of the public as a result of the envelope being pushed so much because of societies’ tolerance for the bazaar, incomprehensible and lack of morals.

The politics of today is celebrity, who can get their picture in the paper and who can make the biggest headline without having to go through the normal channels and better yet, not paying for it. Minimum input maximum output. Studios, PR firms, agencies no longer have to pay for press releases/advertisements, the paparazzi come in droves for free all to get the latest on what our celebrities are doing.

Adopt an African child, drink and drive, have an affair and everything to feed and capture the attention of the masses for their insatiable desire to see what their ‘icons’ are doing. They have become a repository for our laziness.

This back seat driver mentality, living through the lives of our favorite celebrity has become the easiest option for our junk food, complacent, lazy, mundane, structured, boring lives. We want them? turn on the TV, click on a web site, put on their DVD, buy a magazine, listen to the radio, drive past a billboard wear their ‘brand of clothing.’ They are ours, we bought them, we know them, we own them!? We revere, trust, dismiss then discard them when they are not doing what we want?!

This is the politics of our time. Politics makes us think, it makes our emotions erupt. It forces us to care when our thoughts are dismissed. But are our thoughts being dismissed or are they being manipulated to make us think that we have an opinion. An opinion based on what? Based on who is saying it? Why are they saying it? What are they doing when they are saying it?! Are they releasing a movie/CD and need the press, are they bored and need some attention, do they care about the issue, why do they care about the issue, are they being paid to care about the issue, do we care about the issue, really, or do we care about it now only because our icon’ is talking about it so what, does it matter how they got there as long as they are there? Does the ‘casting couch’ still exist? Do we care if it does anymore? Is it a standard, why is that important, does anyone care anymore?

Using celebrities in politics, today’s headline, tomorrow’s kitty litter tray liner? The only problem with that is we forget that they are just people. To use people in any way willingly or not has repercussions, for everyone.
