The Audi A1

Audi A1

The Audi A1 is Audi’s contribution to the super mini car class, it has been built to challenge the Mini as the best super mini and to prevent the likes of the Citroen DS3 taking that title. The Audi A1 has been selling well in Germany since its launch in August 2010; it is due to be launched in the UK in November. The Audi A1 will start from £13,145.

The A1 is not being built from scratch; it is based on the platform currently used by the VW Polo and the Seat Ibiza, both models of the VW Group.

The UK Audi A1 launch will be marked by 300 Audi A1s leaving the Battersea Power Station in London, this is an invitation only event where each Audi dealer can only invite one customer.

Audi is pitching the A1 as the sportiest in its class, with its modern, sharp and contemporary design as well as styling elements from its flag ship models such as the wing shaped LED running lights. The Audi A1 incorporates refinements normally only found in its bigger siblings.

The interior styling has been inspired by the wings of an aeroplane and its four air vents are said to resemble the turbines of a jet. The interior trim will be available in 3 trim levels, the standard, the sport and the S-line.

The A1’s flagship engine is the 120bhp 1.4 TFSI petrol unit. It takes the car from 0-62mph in 9.2sec and on to a top speed of 124mph. The entry-level petrol engine is the 85bhp 1.2 TFSI unit. With this engine the A1 returns 55.4mpg and emits 119g/km of CO2.

Audi’s 1.6 TDI engine is available in two levels of tuning for the Audi A1. The more powerful version produces 104bhp and offers fuel economy of 72.4mpg. The lower-powered 89bhp diesel’s economy is better, at 74.3mpg, and its CO2 emissions of 99g/km ensures it qualifies for free road tax.
