Saturday morning, as I pulled myself out of bed, I overheard a comment on TV concerning the crisis in Iran. My wife had been up for several hours. She was having morning coffee and working her farm on Facebook while listening to a news show. “Crisis in Iran” what are they talking about?
You see, I have been involved in a little project and it has kind of consumed me. About two months ago I began to build a new website. I have been working from 8 A.M. until 2, 3 and sometimes 4 A.M. trying to get things just the way that I want them. Needless to say I have not seen much of my family or my bed much less TV in quite some time.
I sat down on the sofa next to my wife as she continued to work on the farm. “Did you hear what they said about Iran?” “No! I’ve been busy harvesting my strawberries,” my wife said. Wow! What else has happened in the world since I checked out from reality the last couple of months? As I began to think about it, I realized that I really didn’t care. There is a kind of peace that you have when you escape from the world.
Several years ago, my wife and I went to Hawaii. We stayed at the Mauna Kea Resort on the Big Island and as we arrived we were both totally blown away by its beauty. Of all the places that I have been in the world I was immediately struck with the peacefulness of the area. I was excited with anticipation of what the next 10 days would bring right up to the point of entering our suite. “Where the heck is the TV?” The bellman informed me that the rooms did not have TVs. “No TV! How can I survive without TV for 10 days?” Man I was hot. A 5 star resort and they don’t have TV in your suite. How would I stay up with all the college and pro football games? How would I know what the stock market was doing? How would I…?
As we left the Mauna Kea Resort I can, without a doubt, tell you I did not miss watching TV! The area truly was peaceful and I believe a large part of that was due to the lack of TVs. The days were spent reading a book on the beach, playing in the surf, my daily rounds of golf and adventures on and above the island. What a trip and what a memory. I can’t remember ever being so calm and relaxed. You see, escaping reality is a good thing.
I’m not saying being away from my family was enjoyable. IT WASN’T! But escaping the rest of the world, now that’s very peaceful. Turn your TV off for a while, spend time with the family, read a book, enjoy life.
