Building a chicken house? This article will give you some insight into what is needed when thinking about building one. This is some ideas on how to build a chicken house.
When looking at how to build a chicken house, the first thing to do is look at where you might like to put it. A good location would be away from your home, as chickens can smell in wet weather. Looking at wet weather this is another thing to consider, the chicken house needs to face a direction away from storms and driving rain as the shed may get wet inside.

What chickens do you plan to keep?
If you intend to have laying hens there will be a need for nest boxes and perches. If you are thinking of meat chickens then a simple floor is all that is required, anything like perches may damage the meat chickens as they become heavy.
A plan.
A layout of the chicken shed may be needed, it is usually constructed of two walls on the sides, a wall at the back, a roof and an open front, covered in chicken mesh with an access door. Safety from predators is also an issue especially during the night.
The materials.
Timber is an ideal medium to use for the frame, hardwood might be best as it does not rot quickly, but treated timber may be just as good. Generally the roof is covered with roofing iron, and the walls can be fibro, roofing iron or any other medium which would protect the chickens from the elements and predators. Chicken wire netting is best used at the front, so it is easy to view the chickens, plus lets air into the shed. A door of timber and wire netting may be most suitable.
Laying chickens like to perch at night, so several perches could be incorporated into the chicken house as well as a number of nest boxes for the eggs. If the nest boxes are around waist high a perch along the front of the boxes will help the hens gain access to the nests.
Flooring needs to be higher than the outside ground and can be either raised by earth or concrete, this stops the entry of water into the chicken house when rain is heavy.
Hot weather needs consideration and insulating the roof may help keep the heat down in the chicken house especially if meat birds are kept, as these birds are more prone to heat stress. Halving one wall and putting in a section that can be raised will also allow for air circulation.
Purchasing of timber and other requirements.
Timber for the chicken house could be purchased from a timber yard or hardware store, most of the other items will possibly be available from the hardware as well.
When trying to decide on the best way to build your chicken house some help may be gained from looking for books at the library closest to you, logging onto the internet or even visiting a bookshop for books on building chicken houses.
