Embarking on a solo round the world trip can seem a little daunting to say the least, but this experience of a lifetime is the reward for those brave enough to take the plunge. There are lots of benefits to travelling on your own, here are just a few:
1) Freedom
One of the best parts of travelling on your own is the intoxicating sense of freedom you feel You get to choose where you go, when you go and what you do when you get there. You don’t have to defer to anyone else, so you’re in complete control of getting the very most out of your trip. You can also leave the lid off the toothpaste or a wet towel on your bed without risking an argument!
2) Making friends is easier
When you travel on your own, you’re much more approachable than if you’re part of a couple or a group. The chances are that you’ll also make more of an effort to strike up conversation with people. This invariably means you interact much more with the local population than you otherwise would, giving you better opportunities to get to know the place you’re travelling in. It also means you’re much more likely to learn a bit of the local language.
3) Time for reflection
Although you’re bound to make lots of friends while you’re away, you’ll also have a lot of time on your own. This can be a great opportunity to take stock of your life up to this point and think about what you want to do next.
4) Heightened awareness
When you travel alone, you tend to notice your surroundings much more. Often you’ll get to see and experience things that might have otherwise passed you by, making the whole experience richer and more rewarding.
5) Build confidence
Travelling on your own is one of the best ways to increase your confidence and self reliance, as you find that you can solve problems and overcome hurdles that you might have thought impossible. It’s a great opportunity to learn resourcefulness quickly!
Now that you’re persuaded what a fantastic experience solo travelling can be, here are some top tips to help you get the most out of your trip and stay safe whilst you’re away:
1) Always carry a book or journal. These are not only great for killing time on long bus journeys but also help you feel less self conscious about sitting in bars or restaurants on your own
2) Where possible, arrive at a new place in the daytime – it’s safer and it’s less daunting if you do need to ask for directions.
3) Never be afraid to say no. If you’re approached by someone who makes you feel uncomfortable, trust your instincts and politely turn down their kind offer to show you their uncle’s stuffed animal collection.
4) Plan ahead so you know where you’re heading once you arrive in a new place. Decide whether you want to stay somewhere where you’ll meet lots of people e.g. a dorm room in a hostel, or where you can have some time to yourself, e.g. your own room in a hotel
5) If the thought of going to bars on your own fills you with dread, get an early start. That way, you’ll make the most of your time in that place and will be ready for bed as soon as you’ve finished dinner!
6) Lastly, but most importantly, enjoy it! Revel in the fact that you’re travelling the world on your own, and you can call the shots. It really is the experience of a lifetime!
