“Wicked the Musical” is based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, which takes a closer look at the early lives and experiences of the two witches of Oz: Glinda and Elphaba. The two meet at sorcery school named Shiz and although their personalities clash initially (Glinda is incredibly popular and Elphaba is more withdrawn) they do end up building a friendship, with each one learning important life lessons from the other.
One of the running themes of the production is corruption, something that both Glinda and Elphaba feel passionately about. They both have motivations to take on the social and cultural issues facing the Land of Oz, yet their personal convictions and their interaction with others lead them in two completely different directions. Due to a misunderstanding, Elphaba is ultimately ostracized and frowned upon, while Glinda appeals to the masses. The production also incorporates the arrival of Dorothy, with her house landing on Elphaba’s sister NessaRose, the Wicked Witch of the East.
“Wicked” premiered at the Curan Theatre in San Francisco in 2003 and subsequently made its way to New York City and debuted at the Gershwin Theatre in fall of that same year. Initially, “Wicked” received mixed reviews, with many critics completely counting it out. The show, however, became a huge success and is a favorite among theater patrons across the globe. Wicked has a national tour and is also featured on stages in Japan, Germany, Australia and England.
The show was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, ultimately winning for Best Actress, Scenic Design and Costume Design.
